"The day before a Category 4 hurricane arrives, driving down a once packed highway 98 at Sandestin, Florida , I saw absolutely no other cars. A police car moved in the distance, approaching. We wave at each other as if we had some kind of common bond. And maybe we did, as we are both, the only ones left to witness what is to come.
Behind my serenity, there’s an underlying terror of what I experienced in 1970 as I watched the eye of hurricane 'Celia' move over my world. If you’re not afraid of hurricanes, you’re insane. During a hurricane, you’re an ant looking up at the darkness of God’s sole as He walks overhead." Dave Terry, Photojournalist and Webmaster |
| In the photo to the right, thirty two feet of pavement is missing. Much of it can bee seen below the mustang hanging from the missing pavement. In the image below, that was a roadway. On the right, you can see where it washed away when waves rolled over it. |

During a Category 4 hurricane you live on the bottom of a large pot of high pressure air. When a 125mph wind tries to move around something, the lee side forms the low pressure and only God knows what will become of object within this severe low pressure. The experience is one which brings you to your knees, looking up to what you can not imagine. |
